Primary Scripture Reference: Matthew 11:28-30

Sermon Notes and Nuggets

  • Jesus is the source of all that we need.
  • Jesus makes a call to come to the source:
    • All those who are heavy-laden (weary or carrying heavy burdens).
      • There are some loads we are carrying that we have taken upon ourselves.
      • Sometimes when we have a heart for God, we take on the burdens of others.
  • Cast (hurl, throw) your cares upon Him.
  • Labor = burdens we take upon ourselves.
  • Heavy-laden = burdens others put on us.
  • Matthew 23:4
  • If you come to Him, He has a gift for you –> REST! Rest becomes a gift from God. Rest is also synonymous with peace.
  • Take my yoke upon you and learn of me:
    • Jesus is saying… Come as a disciple (learner, student) and let me teach you as it relates to carrying your burdens.
    • Yoke = wooden cross-piece attached over the neck of 2 particular animals that are attached to a plow or carriage.
    • A yoke is used to express someone’s obligation to God.
    • There are different types of yokes (6) which I why Jesus asked us to take HIS yoke.
      • (1) the yoke of the kingdom.
      • (2) the yoke of the law.
      • (3) the yoke of command.
      • (4) the yoke of repentance.
      • (5) the yoke of faith.
      • (6) the yoke of God.
    • Jesus was saying that we need to forget about the other yokes and take His yoke.
  • If we do not take what He offers, we will leave the same way we came.
  • He is meek and lowly in heart.
    • If you keep seeking Him, you will find something.
    • The Word of God is the knowledge of God.
    • When you get to know the truth, the truth that you know will make free.
  • What is different about His (Jesus’) yoke compared to the others?
    • His yoke is easy and His burden is light if you don’t rebel against the yoke.
    • You should have a heart to love God, and if you love Him you’ll keep His commandments.
    • Other yokes are hard and heavy.
    • Easy = well-fitted; adjusted to fitted.
  • Some people are trying to carry loads and burdens without Jesus.
  • Will you accept the call to rest from your labor? Be renewed in the spirit of your mind? Will you accept the call of comfort?
